No personal experience with them, and they are not cheap, but everyone seems to be impressed with their quality.

If you're scratch building, these guys sent me some great stuff, far better than I had hoped for.

Were you looking for lumber or a body and neck already shaped?

If you have a local hardwoods dealer you can usually get really good lumber there for far less and much better quality than the home improvement mega stores. My local dealer has a pretty good stock of ash, hard & flamed maple, mahogany, walnut, poplar, zebrawood, etc.

Heres the first one I built around 12 years ago, using mahogany purchased locally; fretboard from Stew Mac. May be similar to your project: http://s165.photobucket.com/user/JKCavitt/slideshow/Scooter?sort=3

I am assuming you will scratch build here. The precision kits do look pretty good.

you can select your option on the BYO site. don't know about them too much, as far users who have purchased/built one.

precision guitar kits was already mentioned. i know more than a few people have bought their kits from them with great results. you also get the custom option, set it up how you like.

I bought a 7 string kit from BYO a few years ago and it was horrible. Floyd Rose saddles that wouldn't hold the string when clamped, locking nut that was sitting way too high, I had to route out more of the control cavity to get the output jack screwed in.

Also had a bad experience with BYO about 6 years ago. Bought a swamp ash strat body that was supposed to be black and arrived purple. Neck pocket was rough and crappy. They refused to refund it and I sold it locally at a loss. (Was living in Australia at the time). Not sure if they've picked up their game since then.

Precision guitar kits do not have the same kits they used to. A few months ago they were told by Gibson they couldn't make exact copies in terms of the shape. The kits are no longer the same shapes they used to be. They don't say this on their site and actually have most of the old pictures from when their kits were closer to the real shape. Just keep that in mind if ordering from them.
