I was about to order the neck (USACG) for my black walnut tele and was looking at some other finished projects and now can't decide on a maple or ebony fret board.

Here are some pics.
The first is a mock up with a maple after market neck I have but the body is still raw and it will be double bound with cream binding.

The 2nd pic is the back of my body that has been epoxy filled and shows about how dark the final color will be.

The 3rd pic is of someone elses guitar I found as close as I can find to a walnut finish with a dark fret board.

The front of mine has some wild looking grain patterns and I don't think a high figured maple would look right in contrast with the grain of the walnut front (sort of like wearing stripes and plaid) so I would go with a plain maple board (if I go that way).

If it's not maple I think it would need to be darker than the walnut so I'm thinking ebony.

Since the back of the body is a bit more subdued I will go with either flame or birdseye there.

What do you guys think?

I voted for the ebony because I think the contrast looks better. Are you going with that same body finish? I based my answer on the bottom pics body color and finish.

Thanks Joe,

The color on the second pic is probably what it will be close to. I'm not going to stain it or anything. What you see is the epoxy fill before sanding. I plan to just fill, S&S and clear coat both front and back. When I get the front filled it will be a bit darker than the back you see because of the burl being darker than the regular grain.

Tha last pic was just an example of a dark board on a walnut colored body I found on the web.

I agree with Joe. The ebony would look great with a natural dark body.
