I've ordered a vacuum press. Can't wait to get my hands on it! How do I seal the bag when I'm doing a veneer on a rehab guitar body with a set neck? Just thinking ahead!

Do they make a bag large enough to fit the entire guitar in?

I don't know where you got your vacuum stuff, but this site has a lot of free info on using and making and using equipment and they will answer you questions.. and have the most info on using the correct glues for this process.. Wink

The bag setup I had (well... Have just need a new pump) basically had a pvc pipe you would wrap the end of the bag around and then snap another plastic C shaped pipe over.

Doc one thing I did on mine, I added a gate valve and a T fitting between the bag and pump. The T fitting had a cheap vacuum gauge one it. When the pressure would drop (aka loose vacuum) I'd kick the pump back on and reopen the valve for a minute. Usually only had to do this once on an 4 or 5 hour glue up period.

Now is the bag big enough to fit the entire guitar in or are you trying to seal around the neck?

I've ordered the pump and have been trying to decide on bag size. I could get a bag big enough for the entire guitar, but we're talking well over $120 and it's a size I'd I'd only use occasionally. I was hoping I could use something like a 2x2' bag and somehow seal it around the neck with some sort of double-sided tape/foam. If I do get a giant bag, I'll glue the fret board and veneer all at once! I'm sure it would be handy to have around!

Thanks for the tip on the valve, I'll give that a try!

You guys are too funny. Just mention "sucks' and the minds wander all over the place!!! Cool I have been going to that site to order some stuff. Joe's Woodworking is another great site for veneering hints and help.

In the DIY ski building community, vacuum bagging is the easiest way to get into the game. Much cheaper and safer than trying to build your own pneumatic press. They McGyver them out of vinyl bags and refrigerator compressors. Cool stuff.

I'll look around.

I did find lots of bag building materials and you can make a bag for less than 1/2 the cost of a prefab one. So, I might just build a guitar-size bag and a smaller body sized one as well.

I won't be ready to do the veneering until mid-August or so with all of the stuff I have going on.

I thought about that for bending sides on an archtop. Looked like fun!

Good idea Doug, I'll try that.
