Any ideas on how to acheave this type of look? It will be on an Ash jazz body. I have some test blocks in the works with white grain filler.

That is sort of puzzling because I agree it looks like white filler, but how would you have it show and have the wood in between black?
At first I thought it was a translucent black but that would probably affect the white grain.....interesting.

Paint the body black first with out grain filling. Spray a couple wash coats to seal in the black then grain fill with white tinted grain filler. Sand back till the black is exposed outside the white grain filler and then clear coat.

Ralph I'll give you props on that one. Seems common sense after you said it.

Looks like the grain could be painted on, It seems to fit the body shape a bit to well.
The pickup covers have been painted and look like a very good match.....Or Is It just me.
My father was a decorator and I watched him do false grain on doors and window frames, It was very fashionable In the sixties.
He used combs and feathers as well as blending and feathering with dry brushes. You can get some convincing results....but I could be wrong Laughing

+1, the grain on the horns seems unlikely to be natural. My guess is that at least some of that grain is faux (but I could be wrong too Smile).

More agreement... it's a faux finish.

This was discussed many many times over a few years at the Project Guitar forum. Pretty sure the conclusion from several builders was that it's colored filler over a base body color, like Ralph said.

Here's the 5 string along side It, the grain pattern looks very similar Indeed, and It looks even more like faux/painted to me. I google It and every picture that came up has nearly the same grain pattern, ring on each horn, ring beside the controls and the lines radiating from the bottom and that v pattern between the pickups and the controls, wouldn't that be a bit coincidental Wink
