What do you use, surgical tubing or springs? And is there really any difference?

I hate surgical tubing. Love springs. But then, I also love cloth-insulated wire and staggered poles and such...

I like springs as well. Believe it or not I find them easier to deal with too. Go figure. The tubing just annoys me for some reason, I don't know why.

... so it makes no diff on the sound? I read an article where the guy switched to springs and claimed "The guitar immediately gained a discernible amount of resonance and some added presence."

I'm kinda a tech newbie, but it seems odd that it would affect the sound.

I would use surgical tubings if I am actually performing some kind of surgery.... they stay in the hospital where they belong. As for sound maybe cause the pickup bounce up and down it somehow affects the sound?

Eric Johnson could hear a difference, I bet. Wink

Thanks for the input guys... I'm finding myself partial to Paul's reasoning here.

Correct, Paul - Jonathan Wilson of Greenwich Village Custom Guitars worked with Jason Lollar to design this really nice set of relic'ed tele pickups - it was a limited run and I got a set.

I used the springs, but I don't think I could tell the difference. The tubing is certainly easier to use. I've used it plenty of times, but keep it around now for the cases where the springs are giving me a headache. I have some silicone tubing which will probably not dry up as quickly as the latex stuff.

I guess I'll vote "springs" for aesthetic reasons.

I vote for surgical tubing, I loose coil single coil springs much too often.

"Why don't you look at the pickup bottom plate, many times the springs are magnetical stuck there!" Mad

I have a bunch of cheap old pickups hanging from my daughter's dolly stroller. I just "mow" the workshop floor and it picks up all the lost springs. Wink

As I have said many times... I think most people hear more w/ their eyes than ears.
I can NOT imagine how ANYONE could honestly hear the difference...

Yeah it didn't make sense to me that something not in the circuit, that's so small and not really in a position to have an effect by the strings would somehow change the sound. Thanks for clearing that up.

Crap, I couldn't tell the difference if a million dollars was riding on the right answer. Like you said CUrt, I don't think anyone's ears are that good to be able to tell the difference. I always have a hard time with the tubing hanging up on the screws during assembly, I MUST be retarded! Rolling Eyes
