Hello all, I apologize if this was asked earlier but the search function wasn't giving me much to work with.

I will be starting my first guitar body project pretty soon, an ash tele with red tortoise binding. I plan on using transtint dye cut with alcohol then finishing with tru oil.

My questions is simply whether or not you guys would recommend masking the binding while I apply the dye. I might wanna do an (almost) two-tone burst and I'm not sure if the darker dye for the perimeter will affect the binding. I figure if I was to tape off the binding I could just use automotive detail tape (or whatever it's called).

Any input from you guys is always appreciated, pictures will be posted once I begin!

I would definitely mask it. You might be fine without it but my experience with tortoise binding is that it doesn't need anything to make it look darker in any way.

Given the penetrating nature of dye, I would be concerned that even with masking, it may leach/bleed into the binding any way. Two things I would do.

1) I would test some of the dye on a leftover scrap of the binding and see if it wipes cleanly off and if not, see how deeply it penetrates the binding.
2) Maybe leave the binding a little bit "PROUD" of where you want it to be and plan on scraping it "after" the dying process. This way, even if the dye doesn't bleed into the binding, you're no worse for the wear!

Just My $.02 & Likely Worth Even Less,
Gene
