Woo hoo!!! Now that is good to know. I am so ready to really see some good clear coats going on this thing. Thanks TLET. Just a couple more days of fun and then it's time for the waiting game. |

You won't believe this but this afternoon turned out to be very bad for my guitar finish. Let's just say that when cleaning my spray gun some lacquer thinner found it's way onto the guitar (not from the spray gun but from bottle that spilled and splashed). My nice new paintjob looked like Tammy Faye hearing she bounced a check. You wanna talk about disgusted!!! But I am not giving up on this finish. I ordered some more Shoreline Gold and will redo this thing!!! I'll give it a better grain filler job this time around. I could see little spots that I missed. So some good has come out of this crappy experience. I really liked the color I had gotten. All I could think about was this thread and that I hope Murphy doesn't visit me: http://www.reranch.com/reranch/viewtopic.php?t=37723 HE DID!!!
For my redo, has anyone shot the metallics out of a spray gun? I'm wondering if the metallic flakes will clog the nozzle. I'm also wondering if I should shoot it like I did the CAR - about 50/50 gold and clear nitro. It is definitely easier to mist the paint on with the gun.
Does this make me an official member of the CAR Club? |

Bill, thanks for the support. I ordered some more shoreline gold yesterday, and I promise this thing will be back. Check back next week for more updates. I think this time I will have my guitar and the lacquer thinner in 2 different rooms so that it can't be knocked over. BTW, that CAR color looks gorgeous, especially when you start putting the clear on there. I wish I could have shown some pictures of what it looked like before the mishap. If you didn't know that the sparkle came from the gold basecoat, you would swear that the CAR had the metallic flakes in it. It was really gorgeous and makes me want to do the redo even better.
At least I get to spend today removing the old primer and grainfilling so that it is ready to go. |

Nope not yet. You have to SURVIVE. The club is the CAR Survivors Club.
It took me 3 times before I got mine done right. I had the body hanging in a safe place, unfortunately it was a real cold place. The next day I went to get the body out for more clear coats and my Fender P bass had split wide open at the control cavity. I was sick to my stomach but I stripped it, repaired the crack and did it again. That was the 3rd attempt and my 2nd finish ever. Here's what I have now.

Ahhhh...Very nice bass BTW. I remember seeing that one while researching this. It really sucks when something silly happens and you have to start over. I can't say that my screw-up was beyond my control because I shouldn't have had the thinner that close to the guitar. So my bad, but yours was just bad luck. I think if I have something screw up this time, I'm whack gonna the body a few times with a chainsaw and paint "Redrum" on it. |

Yea, CAR seems to be Murphy's favorite snack. So many stories of disaster with this color. That's how the club came to be. Lol!
Hey Joe!! When do I get my shirt and my ID card. Lol!!! _________________ "To me, putting a lacquer finish over a poly finish is a lot like gold plating a turd.

I too am trying to become a member of the CAR Club. I too am finding it a difficult task.
Like others I am in the middle of a MIM Jazz bass refinish in CAR:

It was really Murphy that visited me as much as my own stupidity. Somehow I didn't get the message about misting the red on. I started spraying like a regular color. THe finish went on uneven and got darker and darker and darker. I ended up with a nice Burgandy Mist kinda color. Not bad looking but not what I was going for.
Well now I have stripped back to wood. Shot a coat of S&S and the primer coat is now drying and waiting for the base coat of Inca Silver.
Wow, this is a tough finish. And to think my last finish was LPB and I didn't have a single hitch. Go figure.
Hope to be a member of the CAR club soon!!!

| I hope that bass is going well for you now. I was reading your thread and have to really recommend getting a spray gun to shoot CAR. I got a $35 spray gun from Home Depot that shoots it great. With that, I sprayed a mixture of CAR and clear nitro. After 3 or 4 coats, I had only used half of a can of CAR and had gotten the exact color I was looking for. If you have to redo yours, I would definitely say to get the gun. It will make things so much easier because you can adjust the width to hit the entire guitar and adjust how much goes on there. |

Yeah, maybe I ought to get a spray gun. I do have an old air compressor. I had similar issues with MKW bass a while back - its difficult with rattle cans to get even but light coats it seems. I will check it out. THanks.
BTW, I had enough silver to get the bass coat on - looks great. Unfortunatley I have to order more CAR before I can finish.

I saw that you got a spray gun. Did you get that one from Home Depot?
Got my shoreline gold in today and have the base coat sprayed on. Had a few spitmarks on there which really ticked me off because I religiously cleaned the nozzle trying to prevent it. Oh well, these stood out too much not to do something about so I stopped spraying let it dry for a while and then wet a Q-Tip with some lacquer thinned and hit those little spots. I let that dry and then reshot those areas. It eventually came out pretty close to even colorwise, but there was one spot that just wanted to be a pain. Hopefully, the CAR will cover this up. Letting all of this dry overnight and will start spraying CAR tomorrow. Oh yeah, I shot 2 light misted coats of clear on there too. It was 105 here today so it helped all of this stuff dry very quickly. |

Yes, thanks for the heads up. I have been playing around with it spraying distilled water at cardboard just to get a feel for how to use it. I have never done anything but rattle cans. I have used a spray gun before painting houses but there is no finess un that.
