Over a great grain, I love tobacco brown straight up or MAYBE with a small burst that sticks close to the edge to accent the black hardware. I'm not a big fan of huge bursts that cover too much of the guitar. Looks heavy-handed to me.

I'd also throw in a vote for a really rich brownish red with a brown tortise shell pickguard.

It'll look good whatever you decide. Haven't seen you turn out a bad piece yet!

It was a close vote but I guess since this thread has made its way to almost the bottom of the page the polls are closed. The winner seems to be a 3 color burst with a tobacco brown running very close second. I think I will do a tobacco burst on the scratch J bass I am also building out of quilt top and alder back. The only bad thing is the alder will need to be a solid as it has many imperfections that a trans finish will not look good with.
