I used a gray sand able hot rod primer under my LPB. I made for a nice undercoat, and sanded smooth nice. I was happy.

Several people make them that way. DiMarzio and Duncan both do, and the Duncan SM stuff is plain. So you may be able to get them to sell you a couple. Can't hurt to contact them.
