Make the shim a little smaller than the pocket so the edge of the shim is recessed slightly, hit the edge with a Sharpie, done.

I don't know why nobody's replied - I've seen some beautiful bursts here. I'm no help at all, though. Reranch sunburst aerosols are more geared to Fender-style finishing. Maybe check Stewmac?

I suspect the Callaham saddles and/or top plate are slightly thinner than the MIM stuff.

Yes, as long as it's never going to touch anything it shouldn't.

I use stranded insulated wire for everything except jumpering the lugs on a switch.
