I rubbed newsprint on one for the gray look.
A piece of newspaper with a B&W photo will leave dried up ink the raw maple as subtle as you like.
Too dark? Just sand it off easily.

As for the back/sides, don't apply dye on bare basswood.
It will soak dyes unevenly, and look splotchy and nasty.
Seal it first, then spray lacquer/dye mix on top of that that, and then more clear ...

When doing a burst, I seal each color layer in case I botch the next color.
Then I can just sand off the top layer & not screw up the whole thing.
I spray sealer or just a clear lacquer coat.

Much of the red on those 50's mahogany guitars came from a colored grain filler as well.
Amber on mahogany doesn't really do much.

Drop seal 1st, cuz that will darken the wood a bit from the start.
If any dye touches the wood, it's permanent--no going back!

I would just make a template of the body,
and make a new one for your neck.
